CURRICULUM VITAE
Anastasios Halkias was born in Thessaloniki in 1960. Hegraduated with honors from the Experimental School of the University of Thessaloniki and was admitted 5th in his class to the Medical School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), where he also graduated with honors.
After successfully passing the American FMGEMS and ECFMG examinations, he moved to the USA. There, he received the Fogarty Scholarship and completed a research fellowship at the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from 1984 to 1986.
Upon completing his military and rural service in Greece, he moved to the UK to specialize in Ophthalmology. His training included tenures at Gloucester Royal Hospital, West Suffolk Hospital, and Moorfields Eye Hospital London (1989–1993).
In 1992, while still a resident, he co-authored one of the first international reports on a new treatment for malignant glaucoma using YAG laser: A. Halkias, D.M. Magauran, M. Joyce: Ciliary block (malignant) glaucoma after cataract extraction with lens implant treated with YAG laser capsulotomy and anterior hyaloidotomy. British Journal of Ophthalmology 1992; 76: 569-570.
This technique has since become widely and internationally accepted. In 1993, he returned to Greece and has since been in private practice in Thessaloniki. He is among the first ophthalmologists in Northern Greece to perform cataract removal via phacoemulsification at the ‘St. LUKE’S Hospital’.
In addition to cataract surgery, he specializes in the treatment of glaucoma, the diagnosis and treatment of macular diseases (intravitreal injections), and possesses extensive expertise in pediatric ophthalmological examinations.
